Curtain falls on this season's Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield

in Rugby

The final two games of this season’s Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield take place this weekend and, for the first time in a long time, the competition hasn’t yet been won.

Everything hangs on these last two matches. Champions-elect Douglas B travel to Emerging Nomads and know that a win will give them the title.

They have lost only once this season when they crashed to a big defeat away at Ramsey B but since then they’ve been unstoppable. They did the double over Southern Nomads and thoroughly deserve their favourites tag.

The Port-e-Chee B side does need to be playing well to deliver players for the promotion-chasing Douglas first team and is a useful vehicle for the club.

The likes of Josh Carine and Max Singer are both getting game time with the second string to keep them sharp.

Also lurking in the second team back line are Nathan Knights who is a proven try scorer and Tom Dutnall whose dad Ben is something of legend at Douglas and seems to be a chip off the old block, if perhaps a little quicker and more skilful.

Emerging Nomads will be missing their main strike runner Orry Watterson who is out injured but John Ali also knows his way to the try line, as do the likes of Owen Carvin and Ryan Preston.

Douglas on form, however, should take the points and the Shield. The game incidentally is being played at Castletown’s Poulsom Park and a big thank you is owed to Castletown for this.

Also on in the deep south is Southern Nomads v Western Vikings. Nomads are still in the reckoning but need to win this game and have Emerging Nomads beat Douglas.

If this unlikely scenario does happen, there will be a playoff game between Nomads and Douglas B to decide the Shield.

Nomads have beaten Vikings twice in recent weeks and look likely to make it three as they build for next week’s Manx Cup semi-final against Ramsey.

However, Vikings are a tough bunch and kept Douglas B in check for an hour or so last week and as Nomads know, are tough to break down. Despite this, it should be a Nomads win and a runner-up spot in the Manx Shield.
